On the 5th of June, 2024, Q- Sourcing Servtec Kenya will be joining hands with the Nairobi County to celebrate the World Environment Day by planting of trees. The Campaign promoting restoration activities in the Capital city will be led by the Director Environment. Mr. J.P Malawi. Q-Sourcing Servtec Kenya is committed to embracing ESG strategies built upon the three pillars: Environment, Social and Governance. The integration of the three pillars in a dynamic manner provides QSSK with foundations for transparent communication, genuine engagement, effective governance and informed decision-making.
On this day, the world will be commemorating World Environmental Day. The theme for this year is Land Restoration, Desertification and Drought Resilience with the Slogan “Our Land, Our Future. We are the #GenerationRestoration”. The theme for 2024 WSD focuses on biodiversity protection as it marks the 30th anniversary of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD).
The UNCCD states that approximately 40 % of world’s land is degraded by human activity, thus threatening nearly half of the globe’s GDP (US$44 trillion) and population.
There has never been a more urgent need to restore degraded ecosystems than now. The current generation has a vital role in combating desertification by restoring degraded land to protect the ecosystem. There has been a vast increase in the duration and number of droughts experienced in the world by 29% since 2000. It is further projected that droughts are likely to affect over three-quarters of the world’s population if no urgent action is taken to combat desertification by 2050.
The protection and preservation of the world’s biodiversity for the present and the future generation is a collective responsibility for all. Land rehabilitation initiatives the society can engage in include reclaiming degraded land, reforestation, planting trees to reduce soil erosion, protect biodiversity and mitigate effects of climate change as a key pillar of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration and achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
The host country for 2024’s WSD will be the United Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The nation has long been at the forefront of finding the best solutions in combating desertification. This is evident that biodiversity protection is a collective responsibility for all nations, and approaches to combating desertification should rather be proactive rather than reactive.
