Job Description

Role Context

As a Physical Education teacher at SOLA, Rwanda, the role is vital to the physical development, health awareness, and holistic well-being of Afghan girls in a culturally sensitive and supportive environment. The PE Teacher will inspire students through high-quality physical education instruction that respects cultural considerations while embracing the school’s mission to provide a safe and nurturing space for learning. The teacher will collaborate with other faculty members to promote healthy lifestyles and physical wellness as integral parts of students’ educational experience.

Reporting Line

The role reports to the Head of School (HoS) and the School Principal.

Job Dimensions

Curriculum Delivery: Responsible for delivering a comprehensive physical education curriculum that develops motor skills, physical fitness, and knowledge of health and wellness, while being culturally responsive and aligned with SOLA’s curriculum goals.

o Skill Development: Teach fundamental movement skills, sports techniques, and fitness concepts appropriate to different grade levels.

o Health Education: Integrate knowledge about nutrition, hygiene, and healthy lifestyle choices into physical activities.

· Student-Centered Instruction: Develop lessons that are student-centered, encouraging active participation, teamwork, and personal growth in physical abilities.

o Inclusive Activities: Design physical activities that accommodate different ability levels and cultural considerations.

o Progressive Challenges: Structure activities to gradually build skills and confidence in physical movement.

· Student Assessment and Feedback: Create and administer assessments that effectively measure students’ physical skills, fitness levels, and understanding of health concepts.

o Skill Evaluation: Assess students’ development of specific physical abilities and techniques.

o Growth Tracking: Monitor students’ physical development and fitness improvements over time.

· Pastoral Care and Holistic Development: Support students’ personal growth through promoting physical confidence, body awareness, and healthy self-image.

o Resilience Building: Use physical challenges to foster determination and perseverance.

o Emotional Well-being: Acknowledge the connection between physical activity and emotional health.

· Collaboration with Colleagues: Work with teachers across subjects to integrate physical activity into the broader curriculum and support whole-child development.

o Wellness Initiatives: Collaborate on school-wide health and wellness programs.

o Cross-Curricular Connections: Identify opportunities to reinforce academic concepts through movement.

· Professional Development and Reflection: Stay current with best practices in physical education, especially those relevant to culturally diverse settings.

· Facilities and Equipment Management: Maintain the school’s physical education resources, ensuring safety and accessibility.

o Safety Protocols: Establish and enforce safety guidelines for all physical activities.

o Equipment Inventory: Manage physical education equipment and recommend necessary replacements or additions.

Essential Functions

· Effective Lesson Delivery: Create engaging, active lessons that build students’ physical confidence and competence.

o Demonstration: Model proper techniques and participate in activities when appropriate.

o Progression: Structure lessons with appropriate warm-ups, skill development, and cool-down components.

· Student Assessment: Develop assessment methods appropriate for physical skills and health knowledge.

o Performance Evaluation: Assess students’ execution of specific physical skills and techniques.

o Knowledge Assessment: Evaluate students’ understanding of health concepts and strategies.

· Individualized Learning: Accommodate students with different physical abilities and comfort levels.

o Adapted Activities: Modify activities to ensure all students can participate successfully.

o Personal Goal Setting: Help students establish and work toward individual fitness goals.

· Extracurricular Involvement: Lead sports teams, fitness clubs, or other physical activity programs.

o Sports Coaching: Organize and coach appropriate sports teams or intramural activities.

o Fitness Programs: Develop extracurricular opportunities for students to engage in various forms of physical activity.

Performance Responsibilities

· Student Achievement: Ensure students develop age-appropriate physical skills, fitness levels, and health knowledge.

o Skill Mastery: Monitor students’ acquisition of fundamental movement skills and sport-specific techniques.

o Fitness Progress: Track improvements in students’ endurance, strength, flexibility, and overall fitness.

· Learning Environment: Create an inclusive, supportive atmosphere that encourages participation and physical confidence.

o Positive Reinforcement: Praise effort and improvement rather than focusing solely on performance.

o Cultural Sensitivity: Maintain awareness of cultural considerations regarding physical activity and dress.

· Collaboration and Teamwork: Contribute to whole-school approaches to health and wellness.

o Health Initiatives: Participate in planning and implementing school-wide health promotion activities.

o Community Engagement: Develop opportunities for family and community involvement in physical activities when appropriate.

· Professional Growth: Continuously update knowledge of physical education methods and health science.

o Activity Trends: Stay informed about evolving approaches to youth fitness and sports education.

o Cultural Adaptation: Develop expertise in adapting physical education to meet the needs of Afghan girls.

· School Mission and Vision: Uphold SOLA’s values while promoting physical wellness as an integral part of education.

o Cultural Respect: Ensure physical education respects Afghan cultural values while encouraging healthy activity.

Qualifications and Experience

· Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education, Sports Science, or related field from a recognized institution

· At least 3 years of experience teaching physical education at secondary school level

· Teaching license or certification recognized by the Rwanda Education Board (REB)

· Demonstrated ability to plan and implement diverse physical activities suitable for different age groups and abilities.

· Knowledge of health and safety protocols, first aid procedures, and ability to organize sports events/competitions

Evaluation

The Physical Education Teacher will be evaluated annually by the Head of School and the School Principal based on the quality of instruction, student progress in physical skills and fitness, safety management, and contribution to the school’s mission and values.
