Job Description

Role Context

As a Music teacher at SOLA, Rwanda, the role is vital to enriching the cultural education and creative expression of Afghan girls in a supportive and respectful environment. The Music Teacher will inspire students through high-quality instruction that honors Afghan musical traditions while introducing appropriate global music forms, embracing the school’s mission to provide a safe and nurturing space for learning. The teacher will collaborate with other faculty members to integrate musical elements across the curriculum and develop students’ confidence in cultural expression through music.

Reporting Line

The role reports to the Head of School (HoS) and the School Principal.

Job Dimensions

  • Curriculum Delivery: Responsible for delivering a comprehensive music curriculum that develops musical skills, knowledge, and appreciation, carefully balanced to respect cultural sensitivities while providing enriching musical experiences.
  • Musical Elements: Teach rhythm, melody, harmony, form, and expression through culturally appropriate activities.
  • Music History and Culture: Introduce students to significant musical traditions, with particular emphasis on Afghan musical heritage and appropriate global music.
  • Student-Centered Instruction: Develop lessons that are student-centered, encouraging active participation, creative exploration, and cultural connections through music.
  • Participatory Learning: Create opportunities for students to actively engage in music-making activities that are culturally appropriate.
  • Creative Expression: Guide students in musical creation and improvisation within culturally respectful frameworks.
  • Student Assessment and Feedback: Create and administer assessments that effectively measure students’ musical skills, understanding, and appreciation.
  • Performance Assessment: Evaluate students’ developing musical abilities through appropriate performance opportunities.
  • Musical Knowledge: Assess students’ understanding of musical concepts and cultural contexts.
  • Pastoral Care and Holistic Development: Support students’ personal growth through musical expression, cultural identity exploration, and collaborative music-making.
  • Emotional Expression: Help students understand music as a means of emotional expression and communication.
  • Cultural Identity: Strengthen students’ connection to their cultural heritage through Afghan music traditions.
  • Collaboration with Colleagues: Work with teachers across subjects to integrate musical elements into the broader curriculum.
  • Cross-Disciplinary Connections: Develop projects that connect music to literature, history, mathematics, and other subject areas.
  • School Events: Coordinate appropriate musical performances for school gatherings and celebrations.
  • Professional Development and Reflection: Stay current with music education practices that are relevant to the cultural context of SOLA students.
  • Cultural Competence: Continuously develop understanding of Afghan musical traditions and appropriate approaches to music education.
  • Pedagogical Approaches: Explore effective methods for teaching music in culturally sensitive contexts.
  • Resource Management: Maintain musical instruments, equipment, and instructional materials.
  • Instrument Care: Teach proper handling and maintenance of musical instruments.
  • Resource Development: Create and curate culturally appropriate music resources for student learning.

Essential Functions

Requirements

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Music, Music Education, or equivalent qualification from an accredited institution
  • Teaching license or certification recognized by the Rwanda Education Board (REB)
  • 2-3 years of experience teaching music at secondary level
  • Proficiency in multiple musical instruments and ability to conduct choral/instrumental ensembles
  • Knowledge of both Western and African music traditions, with particular emphasis on Rwandan cultural music
