Job Description

Role Context

As an Art teacher at SOLA, Rwanda, the role is essential to fostering creative expression, cultural appreciation, and visual literacy among Afghan girls in a culturally rich and supportive environment. The Art Teacher will inspire students through high-quality instruction that celebrates both Afghan artistic traditions and global art forms while embracing the school’s mission to provide a safe and nurturing space for learning. The teacher will collaborate with other faculty members to integrate artistic expression across the curriculum and develop students’ confidence in creative self-expression.

Reporting Line

The role reports to the Head of School (HoS) and the School Principal.

Job Dimensions

Curriculum Delivery: Responsible for delivering a comprehensive art curriculum that develops technical skills, creative thinking, art history knowledge, and cultural appreciation, aligned with both Afghan artistic traditions and international art education standards.

  • Technical Skills: Teach drawing, painting, sculpture, design, and other visual art techniques appropriate to different grade levels.
  •  Art History and Appreciation: Introduce students to significant artists, art movements, and cultural artistic traditions, with particular attention to Afghan art heritage.
  •  Student-Centered Instruction: Develop lessons that are student-centered, encouraging personal expression, creative exploration, and thoughtful reflection on artistic processes.
  •  Creative Problem-Solving: Design projects that challenge students to find innovative visual solutions.
  •  Expressive Development: Provide opportunities for students to develop personal artistic voice and style.

Student Assessment and Feedback: Create and administer assessments that effectively measure students’ technical skills, creative processes, and conceptual understanding of art.

  •  Portfolio Development: Guide students in curating portfolios that demonstrate growth and achievement.
  • Critique Process: Teach students how to analyze, interpret, and evaluate artwork through constructive critique.

·Pastoral Care and Holistic Development: Support students’ personal growth through artistic expression, cultural identity exploration, and creative confidence.

  •  Self-Expression: Encourage students to express their ideas, experiences, and emotions through visual arts.
  •  Cultural Identity: Help students explore and celebrate their Afghan cultural heritage through artistic expression.

· Collaboration with Colleagues: Work with teachers across subjects to integrate visual arts into the broader curriculum.

  • Cross-Disciplinary Projects: Develop art projects that connect to learning in other subject areas.
  • Cultural Celebrations: Collaborate on school events that showcase student artwork and cultural expression.

· Professional Development and Reflection: Stay current with contemporary art education practices and diverse artistic traditions.

· Resource Management: Maintain art supplies, equipment, and display spaces, ensuring safe and effective use.

  •  Exhibition Spaces: Create and maintain spaces for displaying student artwork throughout the school.

Essential Functions

  • Demonstration: Model techniques and provide exemplars while encouraging personal interpretation.
  • Process Focus: Emphasize the creative process, including planning, experimenting, revising, and reflecting.

· Student Assessment: Develop assessment methods appropriate for artistic development and expression.

  •  Skill Evaluation: Assess students’ technical abilities in various media and techniques.
  •  Creative Assessment: Evaluate students’ creative thinking, problem-solving, and expressive qualities in artwork.

· Individualized Learning: Accommodate students with different artistic experiences, interests, and abilities.

  •  Differentiated Projects: Design open-ended projects that allow for multiple entry points and outcomes.
  •  Individual Guidance: Provide personalized feedback and direction based on each student’s artistic goals.

· Extracurricular Involvement: Lead art clubs, community art projects, or other creative activities beyond the classroom.

  •  Art Club: Organize opportunities for students to further develop artistic interests and talents.
  •  Exhibition Planning: Coordinate student art exhibitions and community art events.

Performance Responsibilities

· Student Achievement: Ensure students develop age-appropriate artistic skills, visual literacy, and creative confidence.

  •  Skill Development: Monitor students’ progress in acquiring and refining technical art-making skills.
  •  Conceptual Growth: Track development of students’ understanding of visual communication and artistic concepts.

· Learning Environment: Create a studio atmosphere that encourages experimentation, personal expression, and respectful appreciation of diverse artistic approaches.

  •  Creative Safety: Establish a classroom culture where students feel safe taking creative risks.
  •  Material Responsibility: Teach proper care and responsible use of art materials and equipment.

· Collaboration and Teamwork: Contribute to the visual aesthetic of the school and integration of arts across the curriculum.

  •  School Beautification: Lead initiatives to enhance the visual environment of the school through art.
  • Arts Integration: Support colleagues in incorporating visual elements into their subject areas.

Requirements

Qualifications and Experience

· Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts, Visual Arts Education, or equivalent qualification

· Teaching license or certification recognized by the Rwanda Education Board (REB)

· 2-3 years of teaching experience in secondary school art education

· Proficiency in multiple art forms and techniques (drawing, painting, sculpture, digital art)

· Experience in organizing student art exhibitions and integrating Rwandan cultural elements into art education

Evaluation

The Art Teacher will be evaluated annually by the Head of School and the School Principal based on the quality of art instruction, student progress in artistic skills and expression, cultivation of a creative learning environment, and contribution to the school’s mission and values.
